Lingfield Newchapel 4th XI vs SWCC 20th September @ Newchapel

SWCC Debuts: Max Wheatley, Antony Rowland

With only 8 Wanderers available to play calls were made and Paul supplied a couple of players to make the numbers up and still they got there before Dave Field who is now known as '50 minute Dave'. Regardless for time keeping the mighty Wanderers kept Lingfield to a reasonable score  of 172 all out on the final ball of their innings. Pick of the bowlers were Luke 'Sponge' Smith and Ant Rowland (a player from St. Peter's) both taking 2 wickets each. Max Wheatley (St. Peter's) kept wicket for us and showed a great pair of hands behind the stumps taking two catches, one off each of the openers Paul and Luke. Some work is needed with the Wanderers fielding as there were several chances for run outs throughout their innings but only three were taken. There was a moment of madness in the fielding when Luke managed to make another catch doubling his normal tally for the season.

After a lovely tea Max and Jamie open with Max deciding to take it to the bowlers and Jamie taking a subdued roll but still comfortable. After putting 39 on together Jamie is bowled by a perfect yorker. Kim comes in and starts to perform an innings of perfect pace, which wasn't a crawl, along side Max who tried to go over the top one too many times and is caught in the 'deep' for a great 46. Then comes Jordan Wilson in his second game for SWCC and he starts off strong but unfortunatly is caught behind. Then comes 'Woody' who is anything but when he comes to the crease and this was no different but the ball that bowled him moved at least 12 inches off the seam (I was umpiring at his end) and took top of off stump. The other Antony comes in and looks solid but is caught after misstiming a drive. Sponge comes in but soon after Kim gets bowled by a ball from a spinner turning the ball both ways. The first change bowler changes from right arm over to left arm around which puzzles everyone and then changes again to left arm around and between the umpire. No one has a clue what is going on and now I have seen everything! Next to crease in Paul and he starts positivly by hitting a 6 (always get your eye in Paul [pot & kettlesprings to mind]) and soon after Paul is joined by Marco to resume the father son partnership. Marco very confident and positive holds off several balls from both ends including a few hook and pull shots, one of which went for 4. Unfortunatly he gets one that lifts a little too much and catches his glove and is out for a well earned 6. With 2 overs leeft Gemma comes out and starts sledging straight away about the fielders looks. She keeps the ball out and supports Paul who in the last over smashes a 6 and then looks at the scoreboard and sees that it is still mathematically possible to win but unfortunatly nothing more really to hit but we hold out for a draw and a well earned one at that.
