11th July 20th (ish) anniversary of Brunswick Village

Game 1 SWCC vs Samaur

Debut Prashant Meshram

The first match was between the Wanderers and Saumur, although after 10 days of touring one or two of Saumur’s players were in no fit state to play, so they were subbed a couple of players from Brunswick Village…

The Wanderers batted first and struggled in the early exchanges against the tight bowling of Stevens and Funnell. Each were to account for the early wickets of Dave Noakes (6) and Jamie (8) respectively both being bowled.

This brought the nervous but determined Richard “Chuckles” O’Neill to the crease to try and get the Wanderers going. He survived an inside edge that narrowly missed leg stump before settling down and playing some confident strokes to the boundary. Gemma and Aaron had briefly kept Richard company but lost their fight for survival for 0 and 1 respectively.

Richard had powered his way to 35 meanwhile before being bowled by Funnell.

Jez and Gwyllim in the closing stages kept things ticking over with scampering running blended with the occasional 4. Gywlim was bowled with a couple of overs to go attempting a heave into the road, so Jez was joined by Prash who set about their task to scramble as many runs as they could. This had an unsettling affect on the fielding side who in their panic to get the ball in as quickly as possible were giving the Wanderers some potentially priceless overthrows.

Jez rode his luck once too often though and was eventually run out with 21 to his name.

Prash and Taylor “Dave” Salerno saw things to a close and the Wanderers amassed a moderate but defendable 116 in their 20 overs.

Saumur opened with Louvigny and Verdoux and the French pair weren’t to last long.

Louvigny went first with some stuttering running between the pair and an assured stop and throw by the fleet footed O’Neill over the stumps for Jez to complete the easy task of dismantling the stumps. He departed for 1.

Taylor was to strike in the following over with another of his bamboozling deliveries that left Verdoux straying from his crease leaving Jez the honour of removing the bails.

Suddenly, it was looking good for the Wanderers with Saumur reeling on 3-2.

This brought Jez Stevens to the crease to bring some much needed calmness and class to the party. This he did and with good support from German (10) who was excellently caught in deep by Mark Johnson and the obstinate Ratcliff (28) who were looking like taking the game away from the Wanderers.

Ratcliff came out with a runner. Not sure that he was injured, but either way it seemed to fox the fielding side.

Jez Stevens made 53 before retiring with the 50 and retire ruling in place, so he had done his job.

A subsequent sense that with this partnership broken the Wanderers could still win this…

Two overs to go and six runs to win however saw the cards heavily stacked against that.

Prash was to take the penultimate over, and bowled beautifully, hemming down Ratcliff in his crease before luring him into a desperate drive and catching the edge for Jez to take behind the stumps.

What an over. A wicket maiden and still 6 runs required from their last over which Jamie was to bowl.

Sadly, for the Wanderers Jamie didn’t have one of his better overs and at the last hurdle Saumur were to reach the winning post with 2 balls to spare.

A fantastic game of cricket played in the right spirit, but a loss for the Wanderers!!!

Burgers, sausages and all the extras was just what was required to re-inflate the Wanderers’ spirits before embarking in their next game of the tournament. A must win game against the hosts Brunswick Village…

Game 2 SWCC vs Brunswick Village

It was the Wanderers to get their innings underway first once more with the same opening pair of Dave Noakes and Jamie Hyde.

Dave was to fair no better than in his first innings seeing a full blooded drive plucked one-handed in the covers that on another day would have flown to the boundary.

Richard O’Neill feeling confident from his fine first innings joined Jamie to form what would become a 100+ partnership.

Both were seeing the ball very well and finding all corners of the ground with regular ease.

Jamie was first to reach his well crafted fifty which included 5 fours and 2 sixes making way for Gemma to join Rich in the middle.

The loudest cheer of the afternoon came when Gemma leg glanced Stapleton for four through the fine leg region. It was a special moment for Gemma who found herself enveloped in a Richard “Chuckles” O’Neill bear hug in the middle in the ensuing celebrations.

She was to depart soon after being caught and bowled for that four to her name.

Gwyllim and Richard were to pile on more runs for the Wanderers which was to lead to O’Neill’s very popular maiden fifty for the club of hopefully many more which included 6 fours.

Jez joined Gwyllim in the closing stages of their 20 overs and added more precious runs to the total. He finished on 13 no and Gwyllim a great contribution of 20 no steering the Wanderers to 151.

A very strong batting performance with particular credits going to Jamie and Richard both reaching their half centuries in fine style…

SWCC could feel confident that with 151 in the bank a win was probable……

The dangerous pair of Jez Stevens and Barton strode to the wicket and set about their task in assured fashion, knowing however that the run rate of nearly 8 an over was required.

Taylor was to account for the wicket of Barton (18) bowling him with a beauty.

He was to be responsible for the removal of Pengelly the following over with a very well judged catch in the deep by the safe hands of Dave Noakes.

A brilliant bowling change by the skipper brought Aaron on to bowl his over with the danger man facing…

Aaron foxed Stevens with a series of wides (we lost count) some of which Stevens was swiping and missing at. What would he do with the straight one when Aaron decides to bowl it??

The frustration got the better of him when the straight ball came as he launched into an uncharacteristic heave that sliced high but not so handsome into the waiting hands of Luke “sponge” Smith. Danger man gone for 24 and Aaron with the priceless wicket!!

Surely now, with a new pair in and 11 an over required, the Wanderers were in the box seat.

Funnell and De Souza did well but never really got on top and departed for 19 and 20 respectively. Jamie was to take their scalps.

Twenty-four required off the last over was never on with the new pair and proved too little too late for Brunswick ensuring that Wanderers eased to an excellent win.

The all round performance with bat and ball was first class, but the Wanderers excelled in the field holding all catching opportunities and maintaining the pressure throughout the Brunswick innings.

The match between Saumur and Brunswick Village finished with a Brunswick win.

A three way tie with each team winning one of their two matches and a thoroughly enjoyable day to boot!!
