AMBERLEY vs SWCC

Debut: A. Waymark
Captaincy Debut: J.Hyde

Once again, the Wanderers skipper lost the toss, but this time we couldn't blame Paul as this was Jamie Hyde's debut as skipper! The Amberley skipper chose to bat, a decision which he regretted almost immediately as he nicked one behind first ball off Jamie, so skipper gets skipper, and what a superb start! The quick wicket didn't seem to dampen the home side's attacking intent however as 11 was hit of Jamie's second over, but revenge wasn't far away with Taylor bowling the other opener with the first ball of his second over and Jamie getting two wickets in his 4th over bowling the No 3 and then getting the No 4 caught by Mark Scholfield, the batsman sending the ball almost in orbit, plenty of height, but sadly for him, no enough distance (31/4 off 8 overs).

The main partnership put together by Amberley was worth 50 between N.Brown and K.Tanner. The former was dropped twice on his way to 46, eventually falling LBW to Mark S, and the latter whose batting style was from the Dave Field school of foot movement, was run out for 23 by Marco Lincoln, who was fielding as a replacement for Dave Noakes who had evidently pulled a muscle building a wardrobe (well, it wasn't really a wardrobe, but I've waited a long time to get my own back from Spain!!).

Another run out and a full stretch catch by Mark S saw the Amberley innings draw to a close. A good effort by the Wanderers, but it has to be said that Amberley would have scored a lot less if we hadn't dropped a total of 4 catches. A word of praise also for Jamie who commanded the troops in excellent fashion.

The Wanderers openers, John and Noaksey strode confidently to the wicket, well, John did, Noaksey sort of ambled begrudgingly whilst begging John not to attempt anything silly like running a single. John did his best by taking a single off the last ball of the first over, then playing out a maiden in the second over, so David was to face his first ball as a virtual octogenarian, and of course, in true Noaksey style, he smacked it beautifully all along the ground to the long cover boundary for 4. Then he got bowled second ball, his 7 minute nightmare finally at an end. 35 minutes later he reached the pavilion and Mark Scholfield entered the fray.

The progress now was slow, the Amberley openers giving nothing away, but slowly John and Mark gained confidence and the bowling attack started to give the odd ball you could hit. After 11 overs, Amberley made their first bowling change and A Small, bowling left arm over, managed to swing the ball away very late and eradicated all of John and Mark's hard-fought confidence, Mark in particular getting beaten by the late swing. To their credit, the batsmen fought through the tricky patch as bad light gave way to a torrential downpour. A rare loose ball was then dispatched into the cowfield for six by John as the rain continued to annoy. Whilst trying to find the ball, the other half of the Amberley fielders decided to change their glasses, add various types of garments and generally point randomly at the impending gloom. Thankfully however the rain slowly drifted away and we didn't lose any time.

Fielding and bowling now became more of a challenge, and towel after towel was produced by the home side in an attempt to counter the wet ball, yet it was still safe enough to play. The rain, however, did seem to effect the swing, and batting against Mr Small seemed to get slightly easier as a result. Now it was time for John to take control of the match, and show his undoubted class with a succession of boundary 4s and with the score on 81 for 1, John reached his well-deserved 50 whilst Mark was happy to play second fiddle knocking the ones and twos.

The partnership continued and Mark managed to take 11 off one over to get in on the fun, the partnership eventually reaching 110 when Mark was adjudged LBW for 33 with only three runs needed for victory. A good effort on a difficult wicket. Unfortunately there was still time for more drama as Anthony Higgs got caught going for glory, and John was dropped at point, before finally hitting the winning boundary and batting through the match for a superb 76 not out. John really does like this ground, thats two innings and a couple of hundred runs without getting out! The Wanderers won by 7 wickets with about 8 overs to spare.

5 Star Wanderers then, Played 5, Won 5 - brilliant stuff !!
