SWCC Debut: Simeon Lewis, Mark Hiley, Tony Breslin

The Wanderers met Brunswick Village in the annual Cris Neale Memorial Shield 40 over match held at BVCC's Lower Beeding ground.

The weather was overcast and the pitch looked green, so it's no surpise that the hosts invisted the visitors to bat first.

The Wanderers clubbed, drove and smashed their way to an excellent score of 241 for 8 of their 40 overs, thanks in chief to John Bird's superb 96. It's fair to say that the home's side fielding was not at it's best, at least 4 key catches were put down, however credit should be paid to John in particular for taking the attack to the bowler. Mark Hiley notched up 58, Paul Breslin a very useful 22 and Jamie Hyde smacked 23 in double-quick time including the most enormous 6 over mid-wicket that cleared the fence, the road, and half the next field! For BVCC, Ross Tomsett was the pick of the bowlers taking 4-37

INNINGS OF SOUTHWICK WANDERERS

Wanderers Batting

It was good to see the return of Luke Smith to the Wanderers bowling ranks after his knee operation last year. The Brunswick response got off to an unlucky start when Gary Howells snicked a quick ball off Jamie Hyde which bounced off Mark Scholfield's shoulder at second slip and got caught by Paul Breslin at first slip. The hosts lost regular wickets aided by some excellent bowling by Jamie and Luke with only skipper Moroney holding firm until he was caught by a superb catch by Jamie running from long on to long-off taking a skied catch over his shoulder off Taylor Salerno.

The wickets continued to fall  with skipper Paul Lincoln getting in on the act, BVCC then rallied with Simon Mulford and Clive Hawthorn, Simon in particular taking a liking to Jamie's pace and bounce, but by then, the initial asking rate of 6 runs per over was closer to 10 and once Simon Mulford got brilliantly caught by Mark Hiley off Mark S, the match was as good as over, however there was still time for Mark Hiley to dismiss the BVCC no 9 and 10 , with Ross Tomsett (no 10) ending the match with a brilliant catch down legside by Man Of The Match, John Bird.  The Wanderers won by 120 runs.

So the Wanderers regain the Shield and this brings the teams level in terms of the number of wins in this shield, bringing to an ended a winning run of two for BVCC.
